City midfielder Yaya Toure says the decision to name Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
the African Player of the Year award over himself "brings shame to
Africa". Toure was hoping to be named winner of the coveted prize for the fifth
consecutive year after captaining Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations glory. He
was also named in the competition's team of the tournament. But speaking after
losing out by seven points to Aubameyang in the voting, Toure appeared to be
furious that he was denied of the award. The winner was voted for by coaches
and technical directors from around the continent. “I’m very, very
disappointed," Toure told Afrique Foot.
"It’s sad to see Africa react this way, that they don't
think African achievements are important.“I think this is what brings shame to
Africa, because to act in that way is indecent. But what can we do about it? Us
Africans, we don’t show that Africa is important in our eyes. We favour more
what’s abroad than our own continent. That is pathetic. “Even FIFA, with all
its history of corruption, wouldn’t do this.”
