More than 100 Nigerians serving prison terms in Ethiopia are set to be transferred home following the signing of a Prisoner Transfer Agreement between both countries

The landmark "Transfer of Sentenced Persons" agreement was signed in Addis Ababa by Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.

The agreement will allow affected inmates, including those held in Aba Samuel and Kaliti prisons, to serve the remainder of their sentences in Nigeria.

The development comes as a major relief to many families who had repeatedly appealed for government intervention over the welfare of detained Nigerians in Ethiopia.

Reports indicate that four Nigerian inmates died during the period of negotiations, further increasing calls for diplomatic action.

Authorities from both countries have commenced arrangements to facilitate the transfer of the prisoners and implement the terms of the agreement.
