PRESS STATEMENT / PUBLIC CONCERN
To: Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Force Public Relations Office
Subject: Urgent Call for Investigation into Disturbing Video by Alleged Police Officer (ASP Newton Isokpehi)
Source: http://Akilanimontage.blogspot.com
The attention of the public has been drawn to a disturbing video currently circulating online, allegedly featuring a serving officer of the Nigeria Police Force making threatening remarks while on duty.
In the video, the officer is heard stating that he would “kill everyone in any scene” if he is being recorded while on duty. He further stated that the superior officer who informed them that citizens have the right to record police officers would be “the one to bury them.”
Such statements are deeply concerning for several reasons:
Threat to Public Safety: The content suggests an intent to harm civilians, which undermines the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force to protect lives and property.
Undermining Police Accountability: The remarks appear to reject the lawful right of citizens to record public officials in the course of their duties, as upheld by Nigerian courts and the Police Act 2020.
Mental and Professional Fitness: The tone and content of the video raise questions about the officer’s psychological state and fitness to serve in a role that requires restraint and public trust.
Our Request
We respectfully urge the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, to:
Identify and invite the officer in the video for immediate questioning.
Conduct a medical and psychological evaluation to assess his fitness for duty.
Take appropriate disciplinary action in line with the Police Act and Force disciplinary procedures if misconduct is established.
Reassure the public that officers who make threats against citizens will not be tolerated within the Force.
The Nigeria Police Force has made commendable efforts in recent years to rebuild public trust. Swift and transparent action on this matter will reinforce that commitment and deter similar conduct.
We trust that the Force will treat this as a matter of urgency in the interest of public safety and the integrity of the institution.
Signed
